An organization is against Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) installing fiber optic cables in Baringo which has led to massive destruction of catchment areas.

Endao Water Resource Users Association (WRUA) officials have said the ongoing wanton destruction of trees and water intakes has negatively affected schools and communities in the area.

Some access routes to schools around in the area have been rendered impassable by deep trenches and canals dug by the ICT staff.

Roads linking key institutions have been completely damaged and water pipes destroyed and left unattended by ICT officials working in their jurisdiction.

Led by their official Mathew Chepkwony, WRUA has termed their actions unacceptable, urging the department concerned to address their concerns with speed to avert water crisis that has already been felt by hundreds of locals and schools in the area.

Chepkwony wondered why government department failed on agenda of protecting the environment through their actions that go against State master plan.

“It is unfortunate that government institution that should be in the frontline advocating issues on climate change is derailing efforts to combat climate change.

“Our organization is calling ICT to cease actions or else WRUA will find further legal  interventions to tame the unwarranted behaviour,’’ said Chris Serem, official from Endao WRUA.

Kenya is targeting to plant at least 15 billion trees in the next ten years to battle climate change actions that continue to be exacerbated by impact of ravaging floods experienced across the country.
