The government has revealed that it will collaborate with the United National (UN) to ensure that skills gained by graduates of Technical and Vocational Centres (TVC) suitably serve the dynamic local, international work and entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Dr Beatrice Inyangala, the Principal Secretary (PS) State Department of Higher Education and Research in a statement during the celebrations to mark the UN World Youth Skills Day,  said that the Country also aimed at ensuring that the youth gained skills guaranteeing competency and efficiency at work place.

She noted that the UN required that competency at the market should also go hand in hand with determination by the technically skilled young people to promote peace and development which is one of the key pillars towards ensuring the world reaps the full economic and social benefits of the skills.

Inyangala said that as a ministry, acquisition of skills by young people would improve their ability to make informed choice regarding employment in industries.

She said that while University education and Vocational Training had the potential to ensure the youth acquired skills to ensure efficiency and professionalism at work place, preparedness to tackle conflict negatively affecting education and work are crucial.

The PS said that the fresh graduates were being lunged into an environment full of challenges related to violence, bulging crisis youth employment polarised online environment and persistent economic inequalities, all which threaten their futures and overall stability of societies.

“It is crucial to equip the  youth with the necessary skills for fostering a culture of peace, maturing responsible global citizens and promoting sustainable development to build a more just, inclusive and sustainable future,” she said.

Inyangala argued that all the stakeholders in the education sector as well as the industry need to come together  to support skilled young people role in cementing peaceful consistence at the education and work place  which she termed as key pillars towards achievement of all round development.

“Let us unite in recognising the potential of young people as agents of peace and commit to providing them with the skills and chances they need to address the challenges they face as they strived to contribute to peaceful, prosperous and sustainable future for us,” Inyangala said.

At the same time, Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Authority Director General Kipkurui Langat stressed the need for the Country to ensure goals set under United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) insisting on the need to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

“The government is cognisant of the guidance offered by the UN pointing out that good quality apprenticeship, well designed internship and volunteering initiatives had the potential to provide entry points into the labour market for the first time jobseekers and young graduates,” he said.
