Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers across Kitui County are undergoing intensive training in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects as part of a nationwide effort to enhance competence in handling learners under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
A total of 263 tutors, who also serve as departmental heads of STEM subjects in their schools, are participating in the programme. The training is being conducted concurrently at Mulango and Muthale Girls’ Secondary Schools and will run until Friday. It is designed to equip teachers with advanced skills in critical thinking, communication, technology integration, and problem-solving.

The initiative is organized by the Ministry of Education through the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA). It forms part of the government’s broader strategy to promote skills-based education, with STEM subjects at the core of preparing learners for future challenges.
Kitui County Director of Education, Dr. Issack Hassan, underscored the importance of the training, noting that it will enable teachers to nurture learners’ talents beyond academics. “Since not all learners are academically gifted, the CBC curriculum also supports talents and different abilities to allow growth in sports, arts, and technical skills meant to prepare the students for self-employment,” he said.

Dr. Hassan further emphasized the need for teachers to be ICT-compliant, pointing out that digital literacy is essential for remote learning and live streaming of lessons. He argued that technology integration will ensure learners are not left behind in a rapidly evolving global education environment.
The training is expected to have a significant impact on the quality of education in Kitui and beyond. By equipping teachers with modern pedagogical approaches, the programme aims to strengthen classroom delivery and prepare JSS learners to thrive in diverse fields.
