The government has launched a nationwide program to distribute National Identity Cards in learning institutions, targeting students aged 18 and above who are yet to acquire the crucial documents.
The initiative aims to ease access to essential services such as HELB loans, passport applications for students planning to study abroad, and other government services that require national identification.
Kericho County Director of Education, Julius Ngoneshi, lauded the move, terming it a timely intervention that will benefit thousands of students across the country.
‘This is a timely intervention. The initiative aims to ease access to essential services such as HELB loans, passport applications for students planning to study abroad, and other government services,” he said.

He confirmed that the education department will partner with the Department of Citizen Services to accelerate the implementation of the program.
Speaking to the press, Ngoneshi noted that this year’s Form Four candidates will also be included in the rollout, along with students preparing to participate in international competitions and events.
“This initiative will not only simplify the registration process but also reduce the burden on students and their families. We urge parents to support their children in assembling the necessary documents for smooth processing,” said Ngoneshi.
He also appealed to all stakeholders—including school administrators, chiefs, and local leaders—to support the programme to ensure its success.
