The Government has launched the provision of national identification cards to school-going children who have attained the age of 18.

The Kericho County Commissioner, Gilbert Kitiyo, stated that the exercise was designed to simplify the process of obtaining ID cards for students nationwide.

The CC, who was speaking at the Kericho Day School during the launch of the exercise in the county, said the government had rolled out the registration exercise as per a Presidential directive to simplify the acquisition of an ID.

He said, “Today we have launched the registration of students here at Kericho Day Secondary. This is in response to a directive from our President to simplify the registration. We are targeting those students who have attained 18 years and above.” At Kericho Day, they had 130 eligible students.

Mr. Kitiyo stated that the registration of students in their schools was not a new process, as it had been conducted in previous years. “This exercise is meant to be a continuous process, but according to the advice from officers from the department of education, it will not be done during the Third Term because of the sensitive issues of examinations.”

The Commissioner stated that the issue was part of a long-term plan to make it easier for Form Four Leavers who may be eligible to join Public Universities and Colleges to apply for HELB Loans earlier or promptly.

“It will also greatly assist those students who are planning to travel overseas for further studies in preparing for the acquisition of travel documents. So I call on parents to give all the support to their children in acquiring the critical document, which will help them to proceed smoothly in life,” he added.

Some of the requirements include providing a copy of the National Identification Cards for either one or both parents, as well as their Birth Certificates.

In the County, the registration teams have been divided into six to cover all the sub-counties of Ainamoi, Belgut, Bureti, Soin Sigowet, Kipkelion East, and Kipkelion West.

The County Director of Education, Mr. Julius Ngoneshi, urged parents to provide support to the students by giving them copies of their IDs and other relevant documents.

He said the exercise was meant to ease the complications students underwent while searching for the vital document.
