Some 20 special schools and 25 people living with disabilities in Eastern region have benefited from equipment and cheques totalling Sh7.5 million from the State.
The funds will finance the renovation and construction of disability friendly classrooms, dormitories, water tanks, bathrooms and poultry projects.
The equipment included tool kits for barber shops, hair salon, welding, leather work and carpentry, battery chargers, knitting machines and wheelchairs.
The donations were presented to beneficiaries during a function attended by individuals, heads of educational institutions and homes for the disabled.
Counties that benefited from the donations included Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Isiolo, Marsabit, Isiolo, Machakos, Kitui and Makueni and the institutions involved were advised to open special bank accounts for the intended purposes.
National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya Vice Chairman Peter Nyakiamo said the institutions got cheques totalling Sh6.6million while the disabled received Sh900, 000 worth of equipment.
He said the equipment are intended to uplift the livelihoods of the beneficiaries and called on them to use the equipment for the intended purposes.
Eastern Regional Co-ordinator Wycliffe Ogallo who graced the event warned those found selling the equipment or using them for purposes not intended that they will be arrested and prosecuted.
He said chiefs and their assistants are under instructions to closely monitor beneficiaries to ensure that the equipment is used for their intended purpose.
