Government decries surging cases of teen pregnancies

In their tour to check on the conditions of the learning institutions two weeks after the resumption of face-face learning, the government multi-agency team led by Defense Principal Secretary Ibrahim Mohammed has decried the high number of teen pregnancies in the country.

It was, however, revealed that there are over 1000 pregnant girls in Kitui.

Speaking during their tour in Kitui schools yesterday, Mohammed warned men responsible for the pregnancies that they will face the long arm of the law since there is no consent to sex in underage.

“Many of these girls fell to the men’s trap during the Covid-19. Some men took advantage of luring these girls with goodies and others might have done it due to peer pressure. Whichever way, any man involved will face it rough,” added Mohammed.

The PS observed that some girls did not report to school since they were on their due dates. He called on the education stakeholders to make sure that all the girls report back to school after they deliver.

“We want all of them back to class.  Nothing should cut short the bright future of the affected girls,” said Mohammed.

In Makueni County, the team established that social distancing was still the biggest challenge calling upon the school heads to use all the possible innovative ways.
