Kiogoro Ward MCA Walter Mochache has blamed the government for starting the new Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) without ensuring proper infrastructure is in place for seamless transition.
He decried insufficient classrooms, teachers and enough training materials to enable it thrive but instead it has started embarrassing the eager learners who congest in the few available classrooms.
Principals whose schools have no enough classrooms to accommodate Grade 9 learners have been told to improvise them in order to accommodate the affected learners.
The MCA revealed this when he inspected the state of infrastructure of secondary schools in his ward.
He praised Nyaguta, Itumbe and singled out Boronyi Secondary for outstanding performance in KCSE examination results in the last three consecutive years.
He said that the good performance of the schools have attracted many students to transfer from neighbouring schools to these institutions causing congestion in classrooms.

“The consistent good examination results have led to the influx of students from other schools.” he noted.
The MCA advised the Board of Management (BoM) of Boronyi Secondary to consider converting the newly constructed dispensary near the school to accommodate Grade 9 learners.

“We have plans to equip the dispensary with chairs, cupboards and shelves but meanwhile the empty room can be converted into a makeshift classroom,” he added.
He confirmed that most schools have no enough space or not ready to accommodate the high number of students.
An education officer who did not want to be named because of fear of reprisal, confirmed that in most schools, classrooms are incomplete but they are restricted from commenting on the dire situation to avoid embarrassing the government.

Independent spot check by Education News revealed many incomplete Grade 9 classrooms in most of the institutions.
In some schools, heads have pegged tents in the compounds or converted a dining halls to classrooms to accommodate pioneer Graded 9 learners.
Daniel Nyabigo, a parent from Gucha Sub-county, asked the CS for Education Julius Ogamba to enter into partnership with private schools that have enough classrooms to accommodate Grade 9 students from public schools.
