Government asked to allocate adequate funds to schools in Coast for smooth operations

The government has been urged to allocate adequate funds to schools in Coast region in a bid to enable them to operate smoothly.

Speaking to Education News from Mombasa town recently, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) National Trustee, and KNUT, Kilindini branch Executive secretary, Dan Aloo said that lack of adequate funding to schools in the region has been identified as the major stumbling block towards effective operations.

He further observed that many schools in the region do not have the necessary learning facilities, and asked the government to move with great speed to put strategies in place with a view of addressing the infrastructural development to enable learners and teachers stay under conducive environment.

“Several school development projects in the region have stalled due to lack of funds,” observed Aloo.

He disclosed that teachers cannot offer quality education without the availability of the necessary learning facilities.

He also asked education stakeholders in the area to come forward and provide the essential physical learning facilities to schools to improve both academic standards and national examinations performance.

The Executive Secretary, however decried the delay in disbursing the government capitation funds to schools.

“Schools’ programmes cannot run effectively due to lack of funds,” noted Aloo.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education Ministry, Ezekiel Machogu recently said that Capitation for the second term for both primary and secondary schools will be disbursed before the end of this month.
