A teacher from Kenya, Orina Dominic, has been shortlisted for the Global Teacher Award. This comes barely five years after another Kenyan Peter Tabichi won the Prize in 2019.
Orina is a teacher Kugerwet Primary School in Konion Constituency, Bomet County, and was nominated for his work with the 4K Club at the institution.
He is among 50 teachers selected from over 5,000 nominations and applications from 89 countries for the KSh129 million Award.
The 2025 Global Teacher Prize will hold at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on February 11–13.
The winner will be announced next month.
“Overwhelmed and honored to let you know that I have been shortlisted to the top 50 of the 9th Global Teacher Prize! This wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of my amazing people, like you,” Orina shared on his Facebook post.

Orina has been sharing his work on social media and was named the best innovative teacher in the Cheptalal zone under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Born in Nyamira, Orina started growing vegetables in plastic containers within the compared after landlord granted his request.
The vegetables blossomed within few weeks and when his learners visited him they were motivated to start the vegetable project under 4K club.
With the guidance of Orina, the learners added rabbit keeping and the projects started to generate income.
They have been sharing the projects on the social media platforms.
The Global Teacher Prize is a US $1 million award presented to an outstanding teacher who has made an exceptional contribution to their profession.
The award serves to underline the importance of educators throughout the world, and have their efforts recognised and celebrated.
Last year, Patricio Vilches from Chile, a dedicated Basic General Education teacher from Cabildo won the prize. He in a unique single-teacher school in a rural, teaching students from Grade one to Grade Six
