Makueni County Governor, Mutula Kilonzo Junior, has encouraged school going girls to make sure they reach the highest summit in life by attaining their goals.
Speaking in Wote during the flagging off and official handing over of the Makueni County flag to Dr. Faith Mwende, a mountaineer who is set to climb Mt. Everest; he said the girls should always be focused and avoid the notion that completing Form Four alone is the end of the road.
“Don’t think that’s the end of life or academics, keep on studying and exploring your talents for you to be meaningful and resourceful people in future,” Mutula reiterated.
Mountaineer Mwende, born in the hilly terrains of Kilungu in Makueni County, revealed that her dreams of mountaineering started in Class Three.
Mwende is set to climb Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world with the aim of creating awareness of mental health, climate change as well as promoting peace.
The mountaineer, who is a financial analyst by profession, noted that she is ready to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. She added that besides her career and mountain climbing, she is a mentor, mental health champion and educator.
“Mountaineering is a passion to me and I have climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Mt. Meru, Aberdares, Elephant Hills, Kinangop and Longonot among many others, several times. I’m happy I will be the first woman in Kenya to climb Mt. Everest,” joyful Mwende said.
She encouraged girls not to give up but rather maneuver with the challenges they encounter in life.
