Girls are safer in boarding schools, says Principal

By Enock Okong’o

The Principal of Gesiaga Secondary School in Nyamira County Dr. Zachary Ondieki has appealed to the community to put more emphasis on the education of girls because they are faced with more challenges when compared to their boy counterparts.

He said that many girls are in danger of being married off early at the expense of their education.

The zealous principal who addressed parents, teachers and students at the school said the girl child’s education can be salvaged if parents take them to boarding schools.

“At boarding school, they are hidden from external seductive forces to enable them mature both physically and cognitively,” he argued.

The Principal was proud to report that his school had registered 550 Form One students, twice up from the population of last year.

He attributed the high student intake to the adherence to the 100 percent government transition policy.

Dr.Ondieki appealed to the Ministry of education and well-wishers to assist with funds to enable the institution construct extra class rooms and dormitories to accommodate the big student population.

“We do not want to water down our sterling performance in the national examinations because of lack of infrastructure,” he remarked.

Gesiaga Secondary School is among the top national examinations achievers in the county.

Out of the 364 candidates who sat for the 2021 KCSE examinations, 304 got direct entry grades to university.

Among the qualifiers, 18 scored grade B+, 67 B plain, 130 B minus, and 89 and 52 candidates settled at graded C+ and C plain respectively. The last 8 candidates scored grade C minus.

In another forum, Nyamira County Director of Education Boniface Ouko commended Principals whose schools kept on posting good results.

He asked the assistant teachers to love their work and discharge their duties with passion because their promotion depended on meritorious considerations.
