Emily Pain Orkine, 16-years-old, was the top student at Enkirgiri Primary, a public school in Kajiado Central. She scored 371 marks in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam.
But nine years back, her education was almost shuttered; her aunt rescued her from forced Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early marriage.
“It was a narrow escape. My parents saw no value in education,” she recalled.
She was among those who got sponsorship from the Equity Bank’s ‘Wings to Fly’ initiative. She joined Ole Tipis Girls promising to work hard to accomplish her dream of being an accountant.
Joyce Namundaya, her aunt, applauded the Bank for the scholarship.
Eight girls from Kajiado East Constituency received the ‘Wings to Fly’ scholarships.
Area Member of Parliament Peris Tobiko said the bank’s initiative will promote education standards adding they have allocated Sh30 million for bursaries in this year’s National Government Constituency Development Fund-NG-CDF.
Already Sh15 million has been disbursed to more than 10,000 students from vulnerable families and needy students in secondary, college and universities.
The MP urged the students to utilize the opportunity and work hard to achieve their dreams.
