The girl who was murdered in Roysambu along Thika Road, Nairobi was a student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), the family has revealed.
In a statement, the late Rita Waeni Muendo’s family has indicated that the deceased who was in her final year of study had left her aunt’s place on Saturday to visit the man who turned out to be her killer.
At around 5am on Sunday, the family received a message from a stranger demanding for a ransom of Ksh500,000 within 24 hours for her release.
After receiving the message, they did not follow up on the matter but proceeded to report to the police and investigations began.
The body was found stuffed in a paper bag in Airbnb (guest house) with her head missing.
Even after killing her, the murderer still sent messages trying to extort money from the family.
The family eulogized Rita as an intelligent and smart girl.
“She was a spirited and caring individual, known for her unwavering kindness, infectious laughter, and ability to light up any room she entered,” part of the statement read.
They called for those responsible to be held accountable for what they termed as a senseless act.
“During this period of grief, we kindly request privacy as we mourn the loss of (our child). We hope that, in time, the truth will prevail, and those responsible will be held accountable for this senseless act,” the statement read.
Three suspects have already been arrested in connection with the killing, among them a Nigerian who was arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while trying to leave the country.
The DCI had retrieved Instagram chats between the deceased and the suspect.
The motive for the killing still remains unknown.
