Gichugu TVC hailed for empowering youth through practical training

The Gichugu Technical and Vocational College (TVC), in Kirinyaga County, has been commended for its ongoing efforts to equip young people with practical skills that prepares them for the modern job market.

Speaking to the media during the launch of driving and plant operators training course, the Gichugu TVC principal Joseph kimemia emphasized the importance of technical education in the development of Kenya’s workforce. He further highlighted the institution’s commitment to delivering high quality technical education in Mount Kenya region.

Kimemia expressed gratitude to Machere Driving School and Plant Operators for their unwavering support in allowing Gichugu TVC trainees access their machines for hands-on training through the public private partnership (PPP).

“The driving and plant operators training is a marketable course as there is a high demand for skilled plant operators in the domestic and foreign markets, and Gichugu TVC being the only institution in Mount Kenya Region that offers driving and plant operators training course, it will help in addressing the growing demand,” Kimemia said.

The principal also revealed that Gichugu TVC has adopted the Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) modularization in line with the government’s directive. This ensures that trainees receive industry-relevant skills in a span of 3 months, followed by an attachment period to gain more experience.

Echoing the sentiments, Samuel Murage, the director of Machere Driving School and plant operators, emphasized the importance of technical education in the development of Kenya’s workforce.

Murage acknowledged the need for hands on training as he highlighted the growing demand for skilled Kenyan workers in Arab countries where infrastructure projects like road construction continue to expand.

Among the trainees benefiting from the program is Simon Munene, who underscored the value of skill oriented programs stating “This course will help the youth as the saying goes, my skill my future.”
