Mathenge Technical Training Institute (TTI) hosted key officials from the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) on a high-level support and monitoring visit aimed at bolstering technical education standards in Kenya.

The visit, which took place in June 2025, saw the arrival of Gerald Abele of GIZ/FCA, alongside senior TVET officers Mary Koigi and Joy Nkonge. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Mathenge TTI Principal, Mrs. Catherine W. Gikonyo, and a team comprising Heads of Department and trainers.

In a structured meet-and-greet session, the visitors engaged in candid conversations with the institution’s leadership and teaching staff, focusing on the challenges and opportunities in technical education. Discussions centred on curriculum development, industry partnerships, capacity building for trainers, and enhancing employability for trainees.

Mrs. Gikonyo, in her welcoming remarks, lauded the visit as a timely boost to the institution’s ongoing efforts to deliver world-class technical education. “We are honoured to host our partners and stakeholders who play a vital role in supporting TVET in Kenya. These conversations strengthen our shared vision of equipping young people with relevant skills for the job market,” she said.

Gerald Abele, representing GIZ/FCA, commended the institution for its commitment to excellence and innovation in skills training. “Our goal is to walk alongside institutions like Mathenge TTI as they empower youth through hands-on learning and entrepreneurship. The dedication we’ve seen here is impressive and encouraging,” he noted.

Mary Koigi from the State Department of TVET emphasised the government’s dedication to strengthening the TVET sector. “We are keen on ensuring quality assurance, sustainable partnerships, and resource mobilisation to elevate the standards of technical education across the country,” she said, adding that institutions like Mathenge TTI serve as shining examples of what is possible when leadership and vision align.

The monitoring and support visit also included brief departmental showcases, where Heads of Department highlighted recent achievements, student projects, and strategic areas that needed enhanced support. Trainers were given a platform to share their perspectives on improving learning environments and aligning training with industry demands.

Joy Nkonge, who also serves as a technical advisor in the department, expressed appreciation for the collaborative spirit at the institution. “When trainers and administrators work closely with external partners and government agencies, it creates a strong ecosystem for success,” she observed.

The visit concluded with a commitment to sustained dialogue and action, with both GIZ/FCA and the State Department pledging continued support in infrastructure development, staff training, and curriculum alignment.

Mathenge TTI remains a key player in Kenya’s skills transformation agenda, and the June visit further reaffirmed its role in shaping a competent, job-ready workforce for the future.
