The youth of Gatundu South have expressed their frustration with the slow pace of construction for the 4, 000 capacity Karatu stadium, a Ksh. 260 million project that was initiated by former President Uhuru Kenyatta six years ago.
Speaking during the Gatundu South tournament finals, the area MP Gabriel Kagombe said that the stadium commenced its construction in 2017 with an initial completion timeline of two years. However, six years later, it remains far from finished.
“These delays have led to decreased participation of local youths in sporting activities, contributing to increased involvement in antisocial vices such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and petty crimes,” he lamented.
Kagombe thereby called upon the Sports Cabinet Secretary, Ababu Namwamba, to intervene and expedite the stadium’s completion.
“The completion of the Karatu stadium is crucial for identifying, nurturing, and developing grassroots talents,” he highlighted.
Additionally, the MP appealed to the government, through the Ministry of Sports, to support the rehabilitation of other key stadiums in the area, including Gatundu town and Kimunyu stadiums, which play a vital role in local sporting events.
Muthiga FC Captain Mark Ndonyo highlighted the challenges faced by grassroots teams, including the dilapidated state of their playfields, the lack of essential sports gear, and financial constraints that hinder their growth.
He emphasized the importance of proper infrastructure, equipment, and financial support in nurturing talents.
During the tournament finals, Muthiga FC emerged as the constituency champions, defeating Mundoro FC with a score of 3-1 in a highly contested match that attracted thousands of fans.
The champions received a trophy, Ksh. 100,000, and sports gear, while Mundoro FC received Ksh. 50, 000 and various sporting tools.
The third-placed team, Nembu All Stars, was awarded Ksh. 40,000 and sporting gear, while other participating teams received uniforms and balls to support their training for future contests.
