Garissa varsity back to normal as enrollment hits 5,200

Garissa University Vice Chancellor Prof Ahmed Osman Warfa. The enrollment has gone over 5,000 with better security measures in place after the 2015 terror attack.

The enrollment at Garissa University, the only in the vast North Eastern Kenya, has shot up to a record 5,200 as 900 new students register.

This is the first time vibrancy is seen after the terror attack which claimed 148 lives in 2015.

During the orientation, the Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Ahmed Warfa assured the freshers and their parents of enhanced security in their four-year study.

In his speech, Prof Warfa highlighted how they have worked towards improving security, including serious vigil and establishing a police post.

“Our commitment to gifting quality education and sufficient security will ensure a smooth learning experience throughout your four-year study and that is guaranteed,’’ said the don, further assuring the students of adequate accommodation on ‘the oasis of tranquility, resurgence and aspiration’.

He explained the new funding model as one that is fair and aimed at benefitting every student irrespective of class, contrary to the beliefs of many that have opposed its implementation.

The university was briefly closed after the attack, reopening its doors in 2016 having received a charter as a full-fledged university independent of Moi University.
