The shocking murder of Garissa-based lecturer Ochieng Minudi in Bulla Mzuri on Saturday evening has triggered widespread outrage and renewed calls for decisive action against rising insecurity.
Garissa Township MP Dekow Mohamed Barrow condemned the brutal killing, describing it as a wake-up call over the escalating wave of youth-led violence that has left many residents living in fear.
Minudi, a respected educator and mentor, was reportedly stabbed to death on Saturday, October 11, 2025 in the night in what police believe to be a gang-related incident.
“A dedicated teacher, a mentor, and a hardworking Kenyan’s life has been cut short by heartless criminals,” Barrow said, promising swift justice.
“I want to make it absolutely clear—I have, and continue to personally follow up with the police and relevant authorities until every single person involved in this barbaric act is arrested and brought to justice.”
Authorities and residents say Garissa has witnessed a worrying increase in youth gang activity over the past year. Neighbourhoods such as Bulla Mzuri, Iftin, and Waberi have become notorious for attacks carried out by teenage gangs — some members believed to be as young as 14 — who roam in groups armed with knives and crude weapons.
What began as isolated incidents of theft has now escalated into violent assaults and killings, leaving locals terrified.

“These gangs that have turned violence into a habit—who rob, maim, and now kill—will be flushed out completely. Enough is enough,” said Barrow.
Residents report that insecurity has drastically affected their daily lives, with many avoiding public spaces after dark. Shop owners in Bulla Mzuri have also lamented losses resulting from extortion and frequent harassment.
Barrow urged locals that security agencies are being mobilised to restore order, pledging his full backing for community policing programmes.
“Garissa will not be held hostage by gangs,” he declared. “We owe it to the late Mr Minudi, to his family, and to every innocent resident who simply wants to live, work, and raise their children in peace.”
Both the national government and county security committees have recently stepped up anti-gang operations. However, residents argue that long-term solutions must address unemployment, drug abuse, and lack of mentorship among youth.
Garissa Peace Chairman Hassan Osman Shurie also denounced the killing and called on security agencies to move swiftly in apprehending the suspects. He further urged intensified night patrols in identified hotspot areas across Garissa town.
