Garissa schools worried over devastating effects of El Nino rains

Lagos Primary School head teacher Ahmed Khere has expressed concern that the El Nino rains might result in heavy floods and consequently affect learning at his institution.

He went on to lament that as a result of floods, most learners might end up not going to school.

Khere revealed that in the past, as a result of drought, most learners had relocated with their parents in search of water and pasture for their livestock and that a similar situation might ensue this time.

He revealed that the area has more than 300 school age going children yet his school has an enrolment of 40 pupils.

“Most parents opt to enrol their kids for Islamic studies schooling instead of secular schooling,’’ regretted Khere, who noted that in grade six, he has only two pupils.

As a result of the school not meeting KNEC exam centre requirements, the two candidates will have to sit for this year’s KPSEA exams at Modikar Primary School, which is 26km away.
