A school built by the South African embassy has received learning materials from the embassy to mark the commemoration of the country’s first black president, Nelson Mandela.

Students of Zia Ra Wimbi Primary School in Bamba Ward, Ganze Constituency has been gifted with text books, exercise books, geometrical sets, shoes, pens and school bags.

While gifting the students, Ganze MP Teddy Mwabire said that the lack of learning material was the reason for the low enrolment in the school.

The parliamentarian revealed that the school was started in 1974 as a nursery school.

“It unfortunately failed to upgrade due to the biting poverty in the region. The students were learning in deplorable classrooms made of palm tree branches, all the same it became a full-fledged primary school in 2013,’’ he recalled.

He said that the South African donor chipped in with four classrooms while Ganze NG-CDF built an administration block and two four door toilets.

The school head, Richard Kenga thanked the mission for the gesture in gifting them with bags from United Nations children Fund and Volkswagen vehicle Manufactures.

Attributing low enrolment to the school’s poor state, Kenga said despite the school having started in 1974, it is still at grade six with an enrolment of 251 students.

“However, with all these learning material we will pull through and better enrolment in the school,’’ he hoped.

He added that the since students will not be buying learning materials, the gifts will serve as an incentive as they also intend to start a library.

Kenga called upon TSC to send more teachers to the school.

“We have only three teachers here. One at ECDE and three at the remaining levels,’’ he said.

Besides the event, there was also the donation of Mandela books at Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) and a visit to Kakuma Refugee camp. The deserving donation was for the benefit of young women and girls.
