School games competitions resume amid resurgence of Covid-19

Games and sports activities have resumed in Kenyenya Sub-county as events are cut down to reduce crowding, with participating schools being advised to minimize the number of competitors.

According to a letter seen by Education News, Kenyenya Sub-county Secondary Schools Sports Secretary Mr. Walter Ontweka says all 45 secondary schools in the region are required to send one participant per event to compete at Rianyanchabera Secondary School.

“Each school is asked to release and facilitate one teacher to accompany their students to the venue,” read part of the letter.

Mr. Ontweka said that the resumption of sports and other extra-curricular activities was a good gesture because it will break the monotony of learning and refresh the minds of learners.

He asked the games teachers and other co-curriculum teachers to encourage students to discover and sustain their talents through creativity and hands-on participation.

At the same time, the sub-county Director of Education George Ouma has asked games teachers and participants to observe the Covid -19 protocols during these events.

Games and sports in schools were put off two years ago as part of the measures to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. Recently, the government warned of resurgence as infection rates increase.
