Funds available for hiring teachers on permanent terms, Cherargei says

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei at Chesumei. He revealed that funds have been availed to TSC to employ intern teachers on permanent terms.

Funds have been set aside for hiring intern teachers on permanent terms, Nandi Senator Samson Cheragei has said.

“About 46,000 teachers is not a big number. Above all, funds had been set aside for the hiring of these teachers and we don’t see any reason why TSC is not ready to hire these teachers on permanent terms,” he said.

He said Teachers Service Commission (TSC) must hire the interns directly on permanent terms as the money has been availed for the purpose.

Speaking in Chesumei, he argued that employment of teachers on permanent terms will motivate and enable them to cope with the high cost of living.

According to him, the failure to confirm the teachers could lead to disruption of learning in January.

Cherargei further welcome President William Ruto’s announcement that additional teachers will be hired next year, saying Senate will fully support the move.

“The plan by President William Ruto to hire more teachers next year is a welcome move. This will help improve academic standards in the country and as senators, we will do everything possible to actualize the plan,” he said.

Pressure has been piling on TSC to confirm the teachers, with the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) threatening to call for demonstrations when schools reopen.

The Interns signed a one year contract, which is set to expire in January, 2024.
