Coming from a refugee camp could not deter a boy in Nguluni Secondary School from performing at the top in the 2024 KCSE results in his school.

The top boy, Musin Mahjub Ismael, who still lives in the Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana, scored a B plain.

Having fled their country in 2006, Ismael noted that scoring a B-plain was a dream come true for him since he wanted to attend university and become a doctor.

“After completing my national examination, I returned to the camp where I live with my siblings. I will be happy if I get any support from well-wishers to pursue my dream when the time comes,” Ismael said.

Besides performing well, he was also good at basketball.

Nguluni Secondary School Principal Muthyoi Kyule noted that the boy was generally good. He made the school proud, along with eight others who qualified for university.

“The class was not generally bad; they were all good, hardworking students,” Kyule said.

We are prepared to offer the three pathways and strands—social sciences, STEM, arts, and sports—to have a broad spectrum and attract more learners. Core subjects like English, Kiswahili, and community service learning will also be offered.

“The more you offer, the more you get many learners,” said the Principal.

Through government funding, the school has constructed an extra classroom aligned with CBC and readiness for grade 10. They are also constructing extra toilets.

“We are also expecting a school bus from our member of Parliament,” Kyule said.

The sub-county level school is trying its best to perform even better. It has a total population of 271 students, of which 102 are girls and 169 are boys.

Last year, they had nine university qualifiers. One was a girl, and the rest were boys out of a total candidature of 123.
