Four students from Sipala Boys High School in Webuye East Constituency are in police custody following allegations of torching a school dormitory. This incident has sparked concern among local authorities and education stakeholders.
The suspects are being held at the Webuye Police Station. They are expected to be arraigned in court to face charges of arson, malicious property damage, and endangering the lives of fellow students.
Confirming the arrests, Webuye East Deputy County Commissioner Peter Yegon condemned the act, terming it a serious criminal offence. He emphasised the need for parental involvement in instilling discipline, urging guardians to counsel their children during school holidays to deter them from engaging in destructive behaviour.
“This is not just destruction of property—it’s an act that could have cost lives. We are committed to ensuring that those responsible face the full force of the law,” Yegon stated.

Webuye East MP Martin Wanyonyi echoed the commissioner’s remarks, calling for swift and decisive action against the perpetrators. He further alleged that some residents may have influenced the students, inciting them to commit the act.
“There is no excuse for such behaviour. Anyone found to have encouraged or facilitated this incident must also be held accountable,” Wanyonyi said.
The remarks were made during a visit to the school where the leaders donated essential supplies, including mattresses and beds, to support affected students. Sipala Boys High School Principal Francis Juma lauded the gesture, describing it as timely and crucial to restoring normalcy at the institution.
The incident has reignited debate on rising cases of student unrest and the need for proactive measures to safeguard learning environments across the country.
