Four schools burnt in Kirinyaga as blame is pointed at mock exams for unrest

Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Allasow in a security meeting to discuss the unrest in schools. Mock exams have been blamed for the chaos.

Four secondary schools in Kirinyaga County have had their properties burnt as students rioted in the past one week.

The reasons are unknown, but initial reports indicate that the students did not want to sit mock exams, which have hitherto been banned by the ministry. Educationists, however, have so far said that poor leadership is the main reason.

The first institution to suffer unrest was Kerugoya Boys where students burnt a twin-dorm protesting against unknown issue.

Kagio Boys went on rampage today morning, burning a dorm that hosts 70 students.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) held an emergency meeting on Monday trying to strategize on how to handle such issues, blaming the media for fueling the unrests.

Before Kerugoya boys students went on rampage, the administration had arrested 17 students.
