Foundation donates sanitary towels to special school in Busia

Schoolgirls of Rugunga Special Primary School in Bunyala South ward, Budalangi constituency, Busia county have received a donation of sanitary towels from the Teresa Oyolo Foundation.

The Foundation has also pledged to facilitate the purchase of beds, mattresses, reading materials and footballs for the special needs learners.

Addressing the press after presenting the donation on Friday, Foundation Co-ordinator Mr. Ronald Ondiege emphasized that his organization will continue to provide sanitary pads to the girl-child in the constituency so they continue with their studies even during their menses.

“Majority of girls in the constituency have been facing challenges in acquiring sanitary towels as some parents cannot afford to buy them owing to harsh economic times,” he said.

He noted that the situation has resulted to early pregnancies as sex predators take advantage of the situation to trade the sanitary towels in exchange of sex.

Ondiege noted that the organization has built a public library at its headquarters in the sub-county to enable area students to access reading materials conveniently.

He said the foundation had also constructed five classrooms at Bulagu Primary School in Bunyala North ward which had been facing acute infrastructure shortage.

The school acting Headteacher Paul Wangira said the pupils had been facing challenges considering that the school had inadequate toilets with some pupils accessing the toilets barefoot, a situation he noted was a huge health risk.

He appealed to the Foundation and other well-wishers to continue assisting with the construction of additional infrastructure and lavatories.
