Former VC urges residents to plant more trees

Former Chuka University Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Erastus Njoka has embarked on a greening programme to boost the trees cover in Tharaka Nithi county and ensure conservation of the environment.

In his continued campaign to green the environment, Prof Njoka urged the residents to take advantage of the ongoing rains and plants more trees in the area.

He noted that trees are very useful especially in manufacturing of drugs meant for diseases such as cancer.

Speaking at Katharaka Primary school in Maara constituency while donating hundreds of tree seedlings to an environmental conservation group dubbed Green Walk Movement, Njoka challenged other leaders to support the initiative by mobilizing locals to plant more trees.

Njoka however regretted that the spirit of tree planting in the county has significantly dropped and there is need for leaders to encourage and lead residents in planting trees to contain effects of climate change.

He challenged other groups to also own the initiative of planting trees in their areas regardless of their core activities for the benefit of the community.

Terry Njeru, a representative of the movement, reiterated Njoka’s sentiments towards residents in the grassroots to ensure they plant more trees and take care of them.

Njoka started the initiative in 2019 when he was the VC, which saw him plant and donate thousands of seedlings across the county.
