Former teacher enters Garissa senatorial race

By Amoto Ndiewo

A former educationist in North-Eastern Hon. Elias Bare Shill, onces a two term MP for Fafi Constituency has thrown his hat in the ring for the Garissa senatorial seat.

His declaration for the senatorial seat follows Senator Abdikadir Hajji from the southern Abdallah clan who inherited the seat unopposed in a seat his father the late Yusuf Haji held since 2013.

Bare Shill rose through the ranks in the teaching profession and it is also remarkable that he went through the prestigious Oxford University in Britain   for his undergraduate and master’s degrees.

Coming back home in Garissa, he was promoted to an Assistant Education Officer (AEO), however he didn’t  stay long as  the people of Fafi requested him  to represent them in Parliament in 1997 .   Bare walked to the august house on the opposition’s Safina ticket as KANU was the ruling party.

However, though a political green horn, Bare   made a mark as a politician not only as   representative of the people of Fafi but the entire Garissa district (now county).

His exemplary performance was appreciated by then Water Minster Hon. Hussein Maalim who confessed that before Elias was elected, the whole district used to look upon him to solve their problems.

“Once Elias was elected I have found a breathing space as he solved all our problems,” confessed Hussein who made history by becoming the first minister from North-Eastern region.

Though Elias lost in the 2002 polls, he bounced back in 2007 to represent the people of Fafi.

Elias, a pioneer of Wajir High School, the first secondary in the entire remote North-Eastern region believes with political and teaching experience to represent the great people of Garissa at the senatorial level.

He comes from the Awdak clan, one of the three major clans in the county.
