Jenga Mkenya Movement Party leader, Reuben Kigame, now wants the Ministry of Education to ensure security of learners in all boarding schools across the country.
This comes after four students died at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ High School recently due to a suspected bacterial infection.
“The safety of our children in schools is of paramount importance and the recent series of suspected cholera outbreaks is a stark reminder of the dangers that our children face while they are away from us. We strongly urge the Government to work together with all stakeholders to ensure that our schools are safe and that our children are protected from preventable diseases,” said Kigame.
He added: “I would also like to pass my sincere condolences to the families, friends and the entire fraternity of Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ High School for the loss of four students and a teacher, Juliana Mujema. I also wish a quick recovery to the students who are still hospitalized because of the unfortunate diarrhea outbreak.”
He also reiterated that the government must take immediate measures to improve the quality of water and sanitation in schools and provide training to teachers and students on hygiene and sanitation practices.
“We also urge the Government to work with parents, community leaders and health officials to create awareness about the importance of preventing diseases not only in our schools but also in our communities. This will help to prevent its outbreak and claim mores lives in future,” he added.
The school was closed indefinitely last Monday after 500 other students were said to be infected with the mysterious disease.
