Former MP calls for establishment of varsity in Baringo

Former Baringo Central Member of Parliament (MP) Sammy Mwaita has called on the national government to award Baringo Technical College a University charter.

Mwaita noted that Baringo is endowed with four technical institutions, one college, one Teachers Training College and two constituent medical training colleges already up and running.

Speaking to Education News, the former MP urged area legislators to quit the pull and push concerning the location of the university.

“Other counties have since settled on the location of their universities while Baringo leadership is still on the negotiation table,” said Mwaita.

He called on Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi to unite the county’s leadership to deliberate on establishment of the University.

He called upon the residents to utilize the tertiary institutions in the area by enrolling their children to acquire skills and in turn uplift their living standards.

Mwaita opposed the push by some local leaders to close the only Teachers Training College – Moi Teachers College Baringo located In Seretunin.

“This college has trained many teachers. As a leader I oppose its closure,“ he said.

Mwaita argued that Baringo Technical College has big enough land to accommodate a University as opposed to other areas.

“During my tenure as the area MP between 2007 and 2017, I tried my level best to lobby the then MPs to establish the university at Kapsoo but it took political trajectory to date. If no amicable solution is reached, it’s sad that Baringo will not get a university,” added the former MP.
