Kakamega County former Health County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Penina Mukabane has lauded President Ruto on his intentions to return the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) programme after the Supreme Court ruled it as unconstitutional.
Speaking in Kakamega, Ms. Mukabane, who is also an activist, said that many students from needy families had benefited from the kitty which had assisted them to continue with their studies and also improved schools’ infrastructure.
However, she suggested that auditing should be done before the start of any school project so as to track misuse of funds.
Ms. Mukabane asked the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) review team to implement it because it nurtured children’s talent and was learner-centered.
She also noted that the community had a long way to go in empowering the girl child.
The former official said that girls in day schools were denied enough time to study after school due to house chores leading to drop in academic performance unlike their male counterparts.
She added that some girls did not proceed to colleges and universities as boys were given priority.
Thus, she asked education stakeholders to create awareness campaigns and come up with more ways of supporting the girl child’s education.
