Former Education Assistant Minister Mathew Adams Karauri was on Saturday honoured by professionals, government officials, and community leaders at his rural home in Akamia village, Tigania East, Meru County, for transforming lives through education, mentorship, and public service.

The event, attended by dozens of beneficiaries of his generosity, saw speakers describe Karauri as a humble leader whose interventions helped many secure education, careers, and opportunities across Meru County and beyond.

Avocado Society of Kenya CEO Ernest Muthomi, who is also Karauri’s nephew, said his uncle supported his education and that of many others. “I am who I am because of him. He helped countless children from our village access education, many of whom now serve in top government positions,” he said.

Respected scholar Prof. Karuti Kanyinga also credited Karauri for guiding him toward higher education. “He believed in me when few saw the value of education in our region. Today I stand as a professor because of the foundation he laid,” he noted.

Other speakers, including Kenya Literature Bureau officer Susan Rugoi, shared how Karauri’s mentorship opened doors to careers. “He believed in potential. I was young and unsure of myself, but he opened a door that changed my life forever,” she said.

Karauri, visibly moved, urged the younger generation to serve with integrity and humility. “Give it your best and never forget to say thank you when someone helps you,” he told the gathering.

Also present was Karauri’s son, Kasarani MP and SportPesa CEO Ronald Kamwiko Karauri, who praised his father as a mentor whose values shaped his political leadership. “My father taught me to lead with transparency, humility, and courage. I carry his values into every decision I make,” he said, pledging to continue his father’s legacy of service in Kasarani.

Other family members, including Lena, Mwenda, and Naita Karauri, recalled a childhood in a home defined by service and generosity. “Sometimes we couldn’t even come home because so many people were seeking help. Our parents always listened and assisted, teaching us selflessness,” said Lena.

Visibly moved by the show of appreciation, Karauri said the gesture by the younger generation had deeply touched him.

“Integrity, honesty, and humility is the true way to serve people. Give it your best and never forget to say thank you when someone helps you,” said Karauri.

He urged those working in both government and non-governmental institutions to serve diligently and leave a legacy of integrity wherever they are stationed.

The former Tigania East MP, who also served as Director of the Kenya Literature Bureau and once vied for the Meru senatorial seat, was hailed as a leader whose impact extended far beyond politics.
