It was a joyous moment as 160 students from Githunguri Constituency set to join Form One this week received bursaries worth Ksh 5 million.

About 40 students will receive full scholarship for their secondary education while the rest got a Ksh 20,000 boost for their Form One education.

The initiative was spearheaded by Githunguri Constituency Fund in partnership with Equity Bank, Family Bank, Fresher Dairy, Mount Kenya University and Walydia Foundation of Kiambu County.

Gabriel Kago, the area MP who is also the founder of Walydia Foundation, said the initiative was meant to give opportunity to bright and needy children to further their studies.

“I will personally monitor the performance of these beneficiaries through the schools they have been admitted to,” he said.

The Chief Guest at the function, Dr. Vincent Gaitho, Pro-Chancellor of Mount Kenya University who is also the chairman of the Education Board, Kenya Private Sector Alliance Foundation said education transforms children to competitive champions in the global arena.

“Your success in education will be benefit for the community, families and yourselves,” he said

Prof Gaitho challenged the government to establish a sufficient budget to support the president’s ambitious commitment to 100 per cent transition from primary to secondary school education.

“We also need a thorough audit of every government expenditure meant for support of the transition and sealing of any likely leakages,” he added.

Father Lawrence Kamere reminded parents and guardians to keenly observe the safety of their children given the recent media reports of risks children are exposed to.

Dr Wambiri of Kenyatta University encouraged the students that education was the equalizer that doesn’t not discriminate.
