The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Trans-Nzoia branch has rewarded St Joseph’s Boys Kitale football team with Ksh 120,000 for their outstanding performance at the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national games held in Kakamega County.

The team, which scored 12 goals during the tournament, benefited from a pledge by FKF Trans-Nzoia chairman Isaac Munene Kuria, who had promised to reward the boys with Ksh 10,000 for every goal scored.

On Thursday, FKF Trans-Nzoia treasurer Isaac Muchilwa presented the cash on behalf of the chairman at a colourful ceremony held at the school grounds.

“You have made our county proud. We are committed to supporting school sports and nurturing young talent to the highest level possible,” said Muchilwa, praising the students for their discipline and determination, which he said had elevated Trans-Nzoia’s standing in national school sports.

Receiving the reward, sports teacher Austine Musumba thanked Munene and FKF Trans-Nzoia for keeping their word, noting that the gesture would motivate the players to aim higher.

“This gesture has inspired our boys and shown them that hard work pays. We appreciate the support and look forward to even better performances in future tournaments,” Musumba said.

Instin Simuyu, the team’s leading goal scorer at the tournament, also expressed gratitude, saying the recognition would push the players to work harder.

“We trained for months to reach this level, and this recognition gives us more reason to do better. We also want to inspire other young people to take sports seriously,” Simuyu said.

FKF Trans-Nzoia chairman Isaac Munene Kuria, speaking to Education News on phone, said the initiative was aimed at exploring and nurturing talent within the county by encouraging students through such incentives.

“We started this initiative to make school football more competitive and to show our young players that someone is watching their effort. If you reward hard work, it grows,” Munene said.

He added, “My dream is to see boys from Trans-Nzoia breaking into Harambee Stars, into our premier league clubs, and even into international teams. These are our future professionals.”

The FKF chairman said the football is not just about winning trophies; it’s about character development, discipline and opening opportunities and can change lives and build leaders.

“We will continue working with schools, coaches and communities to identify and nurture young footballers. This is not a one-time event, it is the start of a bigger programme to grow grassroots football,” Munene noted.
