Five schools battle for supremacy in climate change debate

Secondary school students drawn from five schools in Nairobi County, gathered at the KCA University, recently to participate in the debate competition organised by Asharami Synergy Kenya.

Participants were tasked to debate for and against the topics, ‘The wealthy are more accountable for environmental harm than the poor’, ‘Are energy-saving life bulbs helping the environment?’ and ‘Plastics should be banned immediately worldwide’.

The winning schools were awarded with trophies, while best speakers received laptops and tablets.
The schools that participated in the debate are: Upper Hill Boys High School, which emerged the winner and produced Best Male Speaker, Ryan Theuri; State House Girls High (pictured below) and Alliance High who scooped second and third positions; the other schools that participated in the debate are Alliance Girls High and Moi Girls School.

Debola Adesanya, Country Manager, Asharami Synergy Kenya said youths in the country should be in involved in matters related to environmental preservation and energy transition.

“The debate platform is our contribution to ensuring students understand environment issues to enable them offer possible solutions. The future of the planet rests on the engagement and involvement of all stakeholders, especially, the youths as we work towards protecting our environment,” Debola said.

Lavinah Gonah, Operations Supervisor at Asharami Synergy Kenya said, “The students have learnt a lot and had the opportunity to share their views. We really thank Asharami and Sahara Group for this wonderful experience, and we hope to have many more opportunities like this for our youths”.
