First Lady Prof Janet Kasili of Kakamega County will pay school fees for 74 girls who are in Kakamega Polytechnic before they do their national exams later this year.
Speaking during the launch of the second cohort of teen mothers at the institution, the first lady said she will pay fees for many more who had dropped out of school due to early pregnancies.
Prof Kasili disclosed that teenage pregnancies have reduced from 14,000 to 9,000 since she started the programme of taking teen mothers back to school.
About 60 teen mothers in each Ward have been taken back to secondary school and polytechnics after their studies were interrupted by the pregnancies.
She opined that teen mothers have learned a lesson and should embark on serious academics and not to fall into the same trap again.
Prof Kasili asked the teen mothers to be ambassadors and teach the rest about the challenges of early pregnancies, informing them of the dangers of contracting HIV/AIDS, developing fistula, and getting diseases like cancer and other conditions.
She urged them to use the chance well and work extra hard in order to be recognized in the communities.
During the event, she also distributed sanitary pads to girls and urged parents to support them fully.
“As a role model I will ensure there is no early pregnancies in the county until girls are legally married,” she vowed.
