First Lady encourages learners to plant 30 trees every year

First Lady Rachel Ruto has urged students across Kenya to plant at least 30 trees each year, encouraging them that they have a crucial role to play in fostering a greener and more sustainable nation.

Speaking during a tree planting exercise at Matuga Girls in Kwale County, she noted the importance of nurturing the environment and called on learners to embrace their roles as environmental champions.

The First Lady’s appeal comes in support of the National Greening Campaign, which aims to increase Kenya’s tree cover and combat the adverse effects of climate change.

“I encouraged learners to become environmental champions and support the National Greening Campaign. Plant at least 30 trees a year to contribute to a greener and more sustainable Kenya,” she said.

Ruto said students should take issues of environmental conservation seriously, emphasizing that every tree planted contributes to the health of the planet.

She also said the government is working with the Ministry of Education and various public, private and development partners to achieve Kenya’s universal school feeding goal of providing meals to 10 million children by 2030.

The First Lady said that the Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing outstanding challenges in the sector to ensure that students learn in an enabling environment and that all learners are supported to achieve academic excellence.

Governor Fatuma Achani said the tree planting exercise is an important step towards promoting environmental conservation and empowering young learners.

She said Kwale has been at the forefront of promoting tree planting and conservation through various initiatives.

Achani noted that her administration remains fully committed to supporting students through the Elimu Ni Sasa initiative, ensuring that they have the opportunity to pursue their education.
