The inaugural Kenya Teachers Colleges Sports Association (KTCSA) competitions kicked off in Machakos today with over 1,900 participants from seven regions battling for glory at Kenyatta Stadium.
The opening ceremony was presided over by chief guest Elijah Muigai, Director at Ministry of Education (MoE), representing the Basic education Principal Secretary (PS) Dr Belio Kipsang.
Known as the Intercollegiate Olympic Games, it encompasses both athletics and ball games.
Speaking at the start of the events scheduled to last 13 days, Muigai said the theme of the games was ‘Developing a Professional, Reflective and Ethical Teacher Through Sports.’
He said the games are the first of its kind; the brainchild of Dr Kipsang.
KTCSA Chairman Duncan Okwaro thanked the MoE for reviewing the entry grades to teachers’ colleges, which has boosted the numbers and revitalized their activities, making it possible to hold such competitions.
“We are grateful for the resurgence of our colleges after the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and low enrollment. We appreciate the MoE for the support accorded to KTCSA and for reviewing the entry grades which has revitalized our activities,” said Okwaro, also extending his gratitude to Machakos Teachers College which falls under Nairobi Region for hosting the event.
He appealed for sponsorship to make the event more successful.

The regions represented are Coast, Central, Eastern, Nairobi, Nyanza, Western, and Rift Valley.
KTCSA Secretary General Paul Maina asked the MoE to support the teams that will win so that they can proceed to the East African championships, saying at that level the teacher trainees will be more exposed.

“We are asking the ministry to support us so that we can have at least one team proceeding to the East African Championships,” he said.
Machakos Teachers Training College Principal Joyce Mambwai said it was a privilege to host the inaugural Olympics edition of the Kenyan colleges, insinuating that they had prepared well to meet the aspired standards.
She asked the government to consider expanding the infrastructural capacity of colleges to host such events.
