First elected female MP, mayor, pioneer teacher dies

Kenya’s pioneer teacher and elected politician, Mama Grace Onyango has died. The late Onyango who was Kenya’s first elected female Member of Parliament and one time mayor has died in Kisumu.

According to her daughter, Pauline Ajwacha,  Onyango died at the Jaramogj Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital where she was undergoing treatment.

Kisumu Governor, Anyang Nyong’o was among people who have sent messages of condolences to the family.

The late Onyango was the first woman Mayor of Kisumu after Mathew Ondiek.

She mentored many people when she was a teacher at Kisumu Union Primary School which was then known as Komulo Primary School.

After retirement, the late was staying a private live at her residence in Tom Mboya estate. She died at the age of 99 years.
