The County Government of Busia has confirmed that it will provide full education bursaries to the first hundred needy students from Budalang’i who are set to join the new campus established by JOOUST.

The assurance was made by Bunyala North Ward MCA Sylvanus Alianda during a public participation forum that was held at the Bunyala Disaster Management and Preparedness Centre in Mundere recently.

The centre has been officially taken over by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.

The varsity which will be a branch of Bondo Campus will be known as Bunyala Campus.

Alianda, who had represented Busia Governor Dr Paul Otuoma, said that the county government was pleased with the decision to open a second public university after Alupe University, saying it will give more students an opportunity for varsity education.

Area MP Raphael Wanjala on his part lauded the establishment of the varsity at Mundere, saying apart from enabling the eligible students from Budalang’i to join the campus, it would greatly change the livelihoods of the locals considering that more rental houses are set to be built.

“The setting up of Bunyala Campus by JOOUST here is Godsend. It will create a lot of job opportunities and developments in the area hence the need on the part of each and everyone here to support this viable initiative,” said Wanjala.

He added that Budalang’i NG-CDF will avail education bursaries to the eligible and needy students to pursue relevant courses at the university.

Bunyala Sub-county Director of Education Mercy Makokha, who had also attended the occasion, said university education had been brought closer home.

“JOOUST has brought education closer to the people. Eligible students will now be in a position to be day scholars,” she said.
