Two makeshift dormitories at St Albert’s Ulanda girls in Awendo Sub County, Migori county on Thursday morning went up into flames.

The inferno that razed down the dormitories did not result into casualties since the students were attending their morning remedial classes , they however lost all their belongings.

While addressing the press in the school compound after the incident, Ms. Phinora Buyengo the school principal said  the cause of the fire had not been established although they suspected it could have been  caused by an electric fault.

“Students who were using the makeshift dormitory lost all their valuable to the raging inferno. We were unable to salvage any property as the fire was too huge, we suspect it could have been caused by an electric fault,” she said

Rongo- Awendo Sub County Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Satia who visited the scene confirmed the inferno brought down two dormitories which houses 204 students although no casualties were reported however the 204-capacity dormitories was completely destroyed.

He further stated that the police in collaboration with the school administration had began investigations into the morning fire incident while dispelling rumors of a possible electric fault.

“We have launched investigations to unravel the cause of the inferno as we look into ways of helping the student whose property were destroyed,” Satia said.

Migori County Director of Education Elizabeth Otieno said the students will not be sent home since they were preparing for their final year examinations.

“We are looking for ways to address the situation and will not send the students home. This is an examination term and the candidate class will be greatly affected if the students are sent home,” she said.

She further encouraged the teachers not be discouraged by the disaster as it would impact negatively on the students.

The fire was put off by community members assisted by the school workers following a distress call by the students.
