Fire razes library complex at Bungoma Boys

An inferno has burnt down a section of the library complex at Bungoma Boys High School damaging books, learning materials and teaching materials in teachers’ offices at the two-storey building.

Chief Principal Enoch Andanje said that he was woken up by screams from students at around 6:30 am this morning, only to find that the fire had razed a better part of the building.

They immediately alerted Bungoma Police Station and the county fire brigade who arrived to contain the fire.

Andanje said that no casualties have been reported among the 460 Form 4 students currently at school, adding that the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

He added that Inspectors from the Department of Public Works will visit the school to ascertain the value of damage caused by the incident.

Bishop Labaton Ochanga, a parent at the school, called on the government to hasten negotiations with teachers to halt the ongoing strike.

Ochanga further called on the county government to invest more resources into disaster management and emergency services, lamenting that the firefighters arrived late at the scene, worsening the crisis.

The County Director of Education Pius Ngoma and other stakeholders are currently holding a meeting at the school to chart the way forward.
