Fighting MPs urged to consider merits proposed varsity will bring to Gusii youth

North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko.

North Mugirango Constituency MP has called on Nyamira county leaders to quit politicizing the matter of the location of the proposed Nyamira University and instead focus on the merits it will have on the youth in the area and the region at large.

Joash Nyamoko said that its presence, wherever it will be located, will cut costs for students who travel far to seek higher education and it will also open up the area for more business opportunities.

“We have been granted this University to assist all students from Nyamira county and the rest of the country but not Nortn Mugiramgo alone,” he said.

Its tentative location being in Kiabonyuru, the MP asked residents to build more rental houses in the vicinity to cash in on rental income from the expected increase of traffic in the area.

He was speaking in Itibo ward on Friday where he noted his constituency spent Ksh93 million for bursaries for secondary school and university students; and infrastructure development. He added that his office prioritized students from humble backgrounds to ensure equity.

Nyamoko urged secondary students to work hard to get stellar KCSE results in order to reap the benefits of being the pioneer students of Nyamira University.

He hinted that plans by the institution to admit its first batch of students this year were in advanced stages.

The lawmaker’s assertions came amid discontent from other MPs in the county including Steve Mogaka (West Mugirango) and Clive Gisairo (Kitutu Masaba) who accused him of misleading the President on the optimal location for the university.

Earlier, Mogaka said that the suitable place should be at Senator John Kebaso Secondary school near Nyamira town because of good security, good road network and other available social amenities such as Nyamira County Hospital which will greatly benefit students.

“I will take this matter to court and stop the establishment of Nyamira University at Kiabonyoru Secondary School,” he vowed.

He cited unavailability of water at Kiabonyuru as one of the main reasons for his opposition and wondered how the area will be able to accommodate university students.

Mogaka asked President Ruto to consider diverting the Ksh500 million he had pledged for the university’s foundation towards drilling a borehole at Kiabonyuru first.

MP Gisairo said that if the two MPs fail to agree, his Manga sub-county was prepared to host the university.

He accused Nyamoko of having sinister motives and urged him to work with his colleagues to ensure unity of purpose among them
