“A teacher is an indispensable resource in our education system and so is a teacher’s mental health. Neglecting teachers’ mental health can have detrimental effects not only on themselves but also on their students, thus affecting the quality of education. A teacher’s mental health is profoundly influenced by various factors, both personal and professional,” an announcement seen by Education News read in part.
Those interested in participating at the awareness are urged to register through mentalwellness@kewota.co.ke and pay a sum of KSh1, 000 to facilitate the participants with t-shirts, as well as contribute to the savings fund for building the Teacher Wellness Centre.
According to KEWOTA, in the past three years, the country has lost close to 60 teachers by suicide, due to mental health issues. Alcoholism among teachers has also scaled, fuelled by financial, home-related, and other mental health-related issues.
