Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions have been urged to ensure the girl-child realizes her full potential by providing opportunities in various fields, especially in sports.
Kisii-based soccer coach, Mr. Atuti, said that most girls have great potential of performing even better than boys in sports but regretted that they are rarely given enough attention, encouragement and exposure to achieve their aspirations.
He was speaking at Nyaore Vocational Training Centre (VTC) in Kitutu Chache North constituency during a girls’ friendly football tournament among TVET institutions in the area.
The coach said that lack of female role models in the field of football and rugby had also contributed to girls in the region not having exposure and a chance to showcase their prowess.
He lauded Assistant Referee Doras Baraza of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) who officiated the matches.
“We need our female professional coaches and referees in soccer to motivate these female youth to rise and claim their position in the sports world,” he said.
Atuti asked football fans to tone down the use of obscene language against female referees when they make tough decisions against their teams.
Saying that bantering may be accepted in sports, Atuti appealed to fans to maintain decorum while venting.
“Let us remember that our sisters love soccer just as the boys and we should motivate them instead of jeering them,” he said.
