Fears of bandit attacks as candidates sit for national examinations

The candidates in Baringo South are in fears as security situation worsens in Baringo. This comes after seven people lost their lives barely 72 hours ago.

Baringo South, being the most affected area has led to merging of examination centres where schools like Kasiela, Chebinyiny and Sinoni Primary Schools in Mochongoi Ward had to be merged. A total of 64 candidates from the area joined other candidates across the country who are sitting for the examinations.

Baringo County’s Curriculum Support Officers (CSO), Mr. Joseph Chirchir noted that candidates from Kasiela Primary School and Sinoni Primary School are sitting for their examination at Mochongoi Secondary School, while those from Chebinyiny Primary School are sitting for their papers at Nyimbei Secondary School.

“All the 64 candidates have already commenced their first paper in the respective schools they were transferred to. Despite the situation, they are rather comfortable, and we wish them the very best,” Mr. Chirchir said this at a press briefing early Monday morning at Kabarnet town.

In a bid to assure them of their safety whilst writing their examinations, the authorities set aside lodging for all the sixty four candidates in the respective school till they conclude their papers on Wednesday.

After the recent attacks in the area where 10 people were also killed last week, affecting schools, most of the candidates are nowhere to be seen.

Area Member of County Assembly for Mochongoi Ward, Kipruto Kimosop described the situation as dire and unlucky.

“It is a shame that the government has failed to protect the future of the young learners who are be put on a test with other advantaged candidates,” he said.

Kimosop who spoke to this reporter on phone, Monday morning, appealed to the government to consideration on ranking the 64 and all candidates from the area affected by banditry to use a friendly criteria while marking the examinations as they are already disadvantaged.
