Father asks elites to speak for the underprivileged

The Chaplain of Kisii University, Father Lawrence Nyaanga has asked the privileged members of the society to speak out for the poor and disadvantaged.

He said that the group had been molded by education which gives them a different perspective of the society and the challenges it faces.

The priest was speaking at Kisii University during a sensitization session that brought together the University’s student leaders, widows and casual workers employed by the Kisii County government.

He took a swipe at the County government for denying to pay its town sweepers who he claimed had gone for 11 months without any payment.

“How does the government expect these people to feed their families?” He asked.

Fr. Nyaanga appealed to the outgoing governor James Ongwae to intervene into the grievances of the workers.

He said that majority of them were widows who depended on the meagre salary they received monthly to pay for school fees among other bills.

Esther Moraa, one of the affected widows accused the Kisii County Chief officer Mr. Lumumba Nyaberi for failing to solve their problems.

“Every time we go to him he keeps on giving us carried forward promises that he never honors,” she lamented.

She narrated with bitterness how one of them committed suicide the previous month after disappointment from the unpaid dues.

“We are working under a stressful environment. Our beloved governor, please hear our cry,” appealed Rosemary Nyaboke.
