A family in Nyakunguru Village, West Mugirango, Nyamira County is mourning the death of their daughter who was struck dead by lightning on Saturday evening.

According to her friends, the late Kerubo Nyamboga was taking shelter in one of the stalls in the village market when tragedy struck.

“We were taking shelter in the stall when we suddenly saw a bright light accompanied by a deafening sound,” said one of Kerubo’s friends, Jane Obare.

The police removed the body to Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.

Nyamira South Police boss Jared Mukhwana said that the deceased was a pupil at Rangenyo Junior Secondary School (JSS).

He appealed to parents to discourage their children from taking shelter under trees and exposed buildings as the short rains season begins.

Residents who talked to Education News asked the county government to install lightning arresters at social places to avoid similar calamities.

Governor Amos Nyaribo expressed his condolences to the bereaved family.
