Quality implementation of teaching programmes at Gikindu zone, Murang’a East Sub County, are hampered by numerous constraints which result in dismal performance by candidates from this region at national examinations.
The challenges include food insecurity, household poverty, negative community attitudes, and lowlevel of literacy among parents, lack of reliable sources to generate revenue and inadequatefacilities at local schools, among others.
The Sub County Director of Education Richard Ng’ang’a, said a myriad challenges have adversely affected access to education in the area.
He said due to scarcity of resources, parents who have low level of literacy engage in casual activities to raise capital to meet basic needs.
“To address the challenges facing the education sector a set of strategies has been developed by local stakeholders”, revealed Ng’ang’a. He said the measures include creating awareness among parents and community on the need to support learning of their children.
Excited stakeholders were encouraged to note that the zone recorded an improvement with 14.36 points at last year’s KCPE, beating others zones in the county.
Ng’ang’a said the area had maintained upward trend in the last three years which he attributed to joint efforts by stakeholders.
